A Greek word meaning a woman who serves, a doula refers to a specially trained birth companion who provides labor support. Her role, different from a friend or loved one, is to be an advocate for you, and to provide complete informational, physical and emotional support. She is there prenatally, during and just after birth. It has been proven that when a doula attends a birth, labor results in fewer complications, a healthier baby and easier initiation of breastfeeding.
A Doula is a wonderful resource regardless of your birth setting, home or hospital. She can help to create and carry out your birth plan, stays with you throughout labor and allows your partner to participate as you desire. As a Doula understands the emotional needs of a laboring woman, she can provide you with that safe space to surrender to the experience.
